The first step is to understand their weaknesses. Maybe not for your child specifically, but middle schoolers, and 7th graders in general. The lack of basic math skills and knowledge has increased recently. More and more students lack those basic multiplication, division, fraction, and decimal skills that are key to being able to apply harder concepts. These students are just passed along to the next grade level, without having these foundation skills. Therefore, a spiral effect begins and students continue to fall further and further behind. So let's end this! Let's work together to help your child succeed and have that math confidence they need!
Most schools give students some sort of diagnostic test to identify strengths and weaknesses. You can also view your child's EOG scores, and interpret (try) what your child is lacking.
It is always a good idea to make sure your child is sharp on their basic skills:
Adding and subtracting 3 or more digit numbers
Multiplying and long division both small and large numbers
Decimals: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing
Fractions: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing
Basic math vocabulary
Multiplication facts 1-12
You child should practice these skills daily, even if it is for 10-20 minutes on the iPad. The more they practice, they more likely it is to stick with them!
